Live Shows Could Be Returning Soon

Indy is already socially distant…

When Walt Disney World reopened last month, the live shows did not return. Part of the reason was that Disney and Actors’ Equity Association could not come to terms on how to keep performers safe. It looks like an agreement has been reached, and there is a possibility that we will be seeing live shows once again in the near future. Disney does not comment on these types of situations, but this has been reported by many reputable sources.

Reportedly, a large part of the reason why the union would not allow performers to return had to do with COVID-19 testing. A new testing site is now open on Walt Disney World property. Testing is free, and open to Cast Members and Florida residents. Appointments can be made at Do I Need a COVID-19 Test? There is a separate lane for Cast Members.

Disney claims that the testing site is not because of the stalemate with Actor’s Equity. According to a statement released by the company:

“We have offered the location to help with community testing and any suggestion that this has been done as a result of any one union is unfounded. The Florida Division of Emergency Management will operate the location which is available to Cast Members and their immediate families as well as Florida residents. Our actions support all Cast and our community at large.”

There is also a statement from Actors’ Equity Association president Kate Shindle: “We have been consistent that testing is an important part of ensuring a safe workplace for Equity performers, and today, I’m pleased to see that Disney World has agreed. With the news that Disney will make testing available for Equity performers and others in the park, I’m happy to announce that Equity’s executive committee has signed a memorandum of understanding with Disney for Equity performers to return.”

No timeline for the return of live shows has been announced. We also don’t know for sure which shows are going to open. When I hear more, I’ll let you know.
